HANDBRAKE thats about the best free app for making vids for devises like ipod etc, then avs video converter is pretty good for everything else as a simple editor and converter, I dl'd version 8.1 and its fine.

I've had luck with XMediaRecode (www.xmedia-recode.de). No watermark or message over vid either.
