Christmas is a favorite time of the year for me. I know there is a lot that’s bad about how it is celebrated, but there is a lot of good, as well. That’s the part I love. Of course, the foremost reason I love Christmas is because for the people of God, it is when we celebrate in a special way the birth of our Savior into the world. Without His having been born, nothing else about Christmas would be of any lasting relevance.
But here are some other reasons I love Christmastime. In many ways, it brings out the best in many people. There is so much goodness shown to others during this time. Yes, I know it’s been occasioned, by and large, by the extreme pressure society puts on us to spend, consume, buy a lot of stuff—as if that’s what Christmas is all about. Nevertheless, I am moved by the way the Salvation Army, churches, charities, businesses, and individuals pour out their hearts to make little needy and less fortunate children smile on Christmas. This is especially dear to my heart because when I was a child, and my mother struggled to raise eight children alone, I was on the receiving end.
I greatly appreciate our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. I pray for their protection. It would be great if they could all be home for Christmas. But they are fighting to protect us so we can enjoy the life we currently do. Thanks to modern technology, many of these soldiers will spend a few minutes on Christmas day with their loved ones who are so far away via virtual meetings through means such as webcam.
A special time I cherish about Christmas day occurs in the morning before breakfast. My family and I meet in the den and sing Christmas carols. Then I lead about 10 or 15 minutes of interactive discussion about the true meaning of Christmas. We join hands and each of us prays. Then we bring out the gifts and bless one another. Finally, we have breakfast, and the day is off and running. This year, five of our six children will be with us for Christmas. My son in the Navy will join us a few days after Christmas.
When you get right down to the bottom line, the reason I love Christmastime is because of the love that fills the air. It only seems appropriate. God first loved us by giving to us His only begotten Son on that first Christmas. So here is wishing for you a Christ- and love-filled Christmas.
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
