The best things is to keep that you are gay on the down low until you know for sure he is not homophobic since then you are safe just in case he is. Don't come out to your roommate since you are only going to see him during your time at school unless you do become good friends then maybe later you can tell him. But if you do end up having a nasty room mate there a good chance that the administrator at your school can change rooms for you if you don't like who your with well my school did that. As for me I never really saw my roommate much since we had totally different classes so I was OK with mine.

just tell the administrators if your having trouble with your roommate they will help sort things out

Don't be such a meany, swiftjohn. After all, you forgot to put 'to' with 'spell,' since 'spell' is in the infinitive, so it's "learn how to spell 'college'" Ohhh I feel like they don't actually pay attention to the roommate matching forms. I've heard horror stories. But sometimes the random people you're assigned with turn out to be pretty awesome. There was this one girl that lived with us my first year who goes down in history as best roommate ever. I'm sure you'll be fine, gayallday. I'm excited for you!

If you're "moving up to colage" I suggest you at least learn how spell college.

I've never lived in a dorm setting, instead I opted to live with 3 girls, and let me tell you BAD IDEA. I know they have Resident Assistants who can help and some colleges even offer floors designated to LGT students, so contact your RA or student affairs and let them know your concerns. You should first see if you can contact your roommate-to-be and find out how they feel about the situation; it's only fair. The only other options are to live off-campus in an apartment by yourself/a friend, which would make it cheaper, or you can hide your gayness, which is probably a bad idea because this is college, you need to open up and explore. Who knows, maybe your roommate-to-be is extremely liberal, or even gay! Good luck!

Most colleges and universities set-up roommates in advance. That gives you time to talk on the phone before you actually meet. Also, most schools realize that roommates matched up at random do not always workout. So, most schools will allow some switching of roommates once the academic year begins.
