I'm as catholic as you get, but the church's witch hunt against gays has to end. Explain to me how you protect the sanctity of marriage by denying it to those that would actually engage in it. Incidentally, heterosexuals aren't exactly perfect in marriage either. Maybe if you want to protect it so much, focus on them. Its an outdated dogma that only exists today to satisfy the staunch constituency in their voting block.

Well guess what. I'm Catholic, I go to church each sunday, and I'm not hetero. Probably the only person still left in the world that's all 3.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Did anyone really expect anything different? The old boy network is alive and well in the College of Cardinals and they are going to protect "this thing of ours". They probably chose a Pope from South America for no other reason than that they have a near religious monopoly on that continent while everywhere else they are in decline. In politics it's called "shoring up the base". I therefore suspect it was more of a marketing decision than anything else with the understanding that existing doctrine will be continued and the stonewalling and cover-ups of past transgressions will go on unabated.

The new chosen pope is the same person that went up against the Argentine goverment stating that gay adoption amounted to child abuse, this one is going to do nothing to move the Catholic church toward equal rights or a womans right to choose abortion or birth control electing a jesuit pope is going backwards and will not bring the church in to the 21st century

I am a catholic because my parents were catholics but I am really an agnostic and I don’t think I will live long enough to see a Pope change anything. This new Pope is a traditionalist and won’t acccept any changes... NO women in the priesthood, NO gays as normal peoples who can adopt children, NO abortion rights for women, NO priests that have the right to get married, NO gays that have the right to get married, NO condom as a protection against STD... just too bad, there are so many good peoples still believing in Jesus, not in the catholic dogma and a new Pope!

There was a warrant for arrest of Benedict as well as civil action to seize the $4-trillion assets of RCC/Vatican. This will most likely wash away now unlike so many bad memories created by servants of satan (not priests) hurting children. This new guy, I give 2 weeks tops to prove he puts the survivors first. He either will lead (as pope) and govern (as head of state/Vatican) by God's law or just placate to increasing secularism. There is only one within Catholicism that should have been elevated to "vicar of Christ". He was not even made a cardinal by the deliberate choice of Benedict, who still have the warrant for arrest served upon him that is the real reason he abdicated. The good man who seeks to bring truth about the most evil and sadistic abuses of some, upon over 500,000 kids worldwide (and still going on!) is Diarmuid Martin the Archbishop of Dublin, who defied Benedict, serving GOD first and Ireland's government as a citizen of that nation by opening up the vaults of his diocese and releasing 65,000 pages of sex abuse documents in the Dublin Diocese alone! Im glad hes a Jesuit. They are good priests and are more for the poor and they have
done much in history too improve others lives.

I think the Church will change, as in the past for other societal changes, aillor of the new pope is a Jesuit. See the movie "The Mission", the natives were considered subhuman. The Jesuits have given their lives for the natives. This is one example among many others. For me, being gay is not a sin. I'm sure we're all in the heart of God. For me the biggest fish is the man of blood, who kill other humans.

All I know is that Brazilians will not be pleased...not much love lost between the neighbours and Brazil had a good candidate and far more Catholics...lets face it most churches are afraid to ignore their "faithful" who use a tiny number of Old Testamant words to justify their personal prejudice. The Church of England is hopelessly split about the gay issue with bigoted African bishops, except dear old Tutu, fanning the flames of prejudice.
