I know exactly what you mean. I had to do the same. I've hidden my true self for most of my life. I'm still not out to everyone, just a select few, but life is a little better now that I've taken that first step out of the closet. I still have way to go, but the path is a little brighter now and I can see the way ahead. I wish you luck with your journey. Just go at your own pace and follow your instincts.
