for those of you who don't know ..equally appalling was the murder of James Byrd, a black man who was dragged to death behind a pick up truck. Here is a copy of the content in the act. Once again we are beholding to President Barrack Obama for signing it into law in 2009...... ...........................................................The Matthew Shepard/James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009

If you or someone you know has been the victim of a hate crime based on sexual orientation or gender identity, the FBI may be able to help you.

The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 gives the FBI authority to investigate violent hate crimes, including violence directed at the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.

This new federal civil rights law criminalizes willfully causing bodily injury (or attempting to do so with fire, a firearm, or other dangerous weapon) when:

(1) the crime was committed because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, of any person, or;

(2) the crime was committed because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of any person, and the crime affected interstate or foreign commerce, or occurred on federal property.

If you or someone you know is a victim of a hate crime, or if you have direct knowledge of such a crime, please contact your local FBI office (see below). This new law protects all persons equally regardless of immigration status. Reporting the incident to the FBI is a necessary step to ensuring justice for all victims of violent hate crimes.

thanks for posting that Thomas. Matthew will never be forgotten. His death was tragic, but his parents and many other people made sure the message got out about homophobia and bullying. we have made great strides but have a long way to go. Matthew was such a gentle and handsome young man. I hope his killers don't have a day where they don't regret what they did.

Compassion and inspiration were plentiful in this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival, which wrapped Sunday night at Tower City Cinemas after drawing a record 97,804 fans over 12 days.

“Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine,” the documentary about the young gay man whose brutal murder in 1998 inspired a generation of gay activists, won the festival’s top prize: The Roxanne T. Mueller Audience Choice Award.

his father was VERY articulate. I remember when it happened..it scared me to come out short term ...but long term it gave me strength to stand up to bullies and homophobes.

"I would like nothing better than to see you die, Mr. McKinney, but now is the time to begin the healing process. Every time you celebrate Christmas, a birthday, or the Fourth of July, remember Matthew isn't. Every time you wake up in that prison cell, remember you had the opportunity and the ability to stop your actions that night. " -Dennis Shepard, Matthew Shepard's father at Aaron McKinney's trial.

I was so saddened when I read the news. He was (from what I was reading) a fine young lad, and this should never have happened to him. You are right @BSR.. we have indeed come a long way... and have learned many lessons. R.I.P. Matthew.. you may no longer be with us all... but we will never forget you. Thanks for sharing this post :)

I know in my state scholarships are given to in-coming GBLT college Freshman that are connected to Mathew Shepherd. The light is passed on to new generations. Sadly, though, what happened to him can still happen today.

I have never forgotten the story..it made a huge impact on America starting to understand gays are not a threat but just people struggling for equality. Obama despite the hard right opposition has brought America kicking and screaming into the 21st century. They are beginning to see gays are not a threat even when married...did heterosexual marriage come falling down because many states now recognize equality for gays?

Well I guess I'm a lover not a fighter. Remember the chant: "Make love, not war". I mean I don't even like "rough sex"! hehe. Very small, very lame joke. Sorry, can't help it. I'm just a wag. lol ;)

@NickBlack Exactly Nick. How would it look of Superman and Batman tried to talk to the villains and be kind to them? No, Superman and Batman see the evil and then ball up their fists and punch evil right in it's turkey fuckin' neck! Easy!

Yes, they are bad as communists - all those buggers ever understand is brute force. That is why I love the early James Bond movies - because he kills lots of communists. You have to fight evil, not appease it.

The only thing a savage understands is savagery. You cant try to reason with them and be kind because they cant understand that. They only understand force. What you need to do is get some baseball bats, hit some nails into the barrels and start hitting some home runs. Simple and effective. Not to mention fun.

Yes, exactly - the only thing some people respect are being bigger and meaner than they are; holding hands and singing kumbya isn't going to cut it.
