Thanksgiving is generally viewed with vague historical references to Puritans coming from England and a very idealized view of their benevolent relationship to Native Americans. A peaceful trade between the two groups is portrayed in which the Indians teach the Puritans how to farm, hunt and survive in the new world, introduce corn to them and give up all their land so the Puritans could teach them Christianity, how to live a biblical life based on Leviticus, learn the English language and culture of the Europeans plus the freedom to be governed by the white people with big black hats. In thanks for this, the Indians threw a lavish feast for their benevolent new friends. In modern times this is centered around a meal which you feel obligated to eat with relatives and generally consists of a turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce. Corn, mashed potatoes with gravy are also common elements, but different families and regions may have their variations. Ideally it's a day when we're supposed thankful for our blessings and share the bounty with family, sort of Fall Harvest celebration. In reality, it often ends in dysfunctional extended families being forced into the same room for a day. This can stir up old grudges and open old wounds from past conflicts. Many people resort to alcohol or benzos or whatever to cope with this trauma which lowers their inhibitions and sometimes causes emotional purges, arguments, shocking confessions, dark secrets revealed, etc. It often reaches a dramatic climax, but by that time the massive amounts of turkey consumed releases its active ingredient, tryptophan, causing a drowsy sedation usually followed by hours of groggily glaring at the football games on tv broken up by occasional naps. After hours of this relaxed hypnotic state, leftover turkey is sometimes consumed in sandwich form, putting more tryptophan into the body keeping the participants docile until they either go to bed or go home for hours of restful slumber. The events of the day are usually repressed until the next Thanksgiving. The following day there is no discussion of the drama that happened as massive retail sales are provided to distract the populace and encourage them to spend money on Christmas gifts.

thanksgiving is a day when you endure family. yes, you get to gorge yourself on wonderful food and watch football or play games, but my partner and i still mingle with aunts and uncles who don't know what to say or how to start a conversation because you are a gay couple. or they stare. or they whisper behind your back. or the dirty old single uncle that goes home and jacks off because he is jealous. or the 16 year old cousin that says she is a lesbian and she understands us. fuk them i say, as i hold my bf's hand or rub his shoulder. at least his rents and my siblings have accepted it. its awkward, but what would we do without weird families.

To be honest, I've not thought about Christmas at all. Ever since I had some trouble a couple of years ago, and add being alone to the list... it's just not the same. BUT... I do love seeing other people happy :)

Our house doesn't do Christmas. We have always given in the moment and never required a holiday to give to each other....and we have claimed Thanksgiving as our personal day...no intrusions from others...just us together. Bloody Mary's and Bagels to start....and then on to Champagne and dinner prep work....since we are vegetarians, no turkey is slaughtered for our feast...but feast we do with a nice rich burgundy to set it all in place....and end the day with a nice aperitif with coffee and a deep dish sour cream apple pie with walnuts.

Canadian Thanksgiving aint the same as us. We did a genocide.

I echo Steelys sentiments. We pig out on Turkey Day, then drink until wasted blind, puke, and then start all over again! The advantage of this approach is you have no leftovers to deal with! As for Christmas, Bah, Humbug! It's all about businesses making money off your frenzied guilt ridden shopping, and I'll have no truck with such blatant hypocrisy! How about just a hug and a kiss for your near and dear?! That's what I call holiday cheer straight from the heart! lol :))

Austin..its like anytime you get family and friends together and have a nice meal..here most everyone is off work and 3 nfl football games are on..one after the other..it can be nice or a pain..depending on your situation..

Canadians have Thanksgiving too you know lol... But I like leaving Christmas shopping until the final day, that way there is more of a bustling atmosphere in the shops. All great fun!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It's like a more relaxed and drunk Christmas with less gift drama and more eating and being drunk. It's a lovely day IMO
