Camp Gay Men

How do you feel about camp gay men?

The reason I ask is there is an interesting article in pink news about how a lot of gay men hate those who are camp and singles out certain comedians such as John Inman and Larry Grayson (two hilarious men who made millions laugh by being over the top gay characters on television)

I wondered what everyone's thoughts on the subject are; do camp men embarrass you? do not like camp men? do you consider it just part of life within a gay scene in your city? do you prefer camp men to straight acting?

I run away from a camp. Since I had the first experience with a guy I thought he was gay and in the conversations he hated gays, since then I got very confused. In my opinion a camp is someone that did not find itself what it is or what it wants’

i once went out with a camp guy, turned out it was worse than living with a woman. I dont like women, i like men, for being men.

I appear very straight, and some camp gays do bother me. A natural camp personality is usually fine, but camp bitch turns me off. In addition to the bitch persona, the ultra FLAMboyant, "I gotta be the center of attention every moment" type is a turn-off. I wish I still had a few campy friends, but as with most friends over time, they have drifted off, moved, settled down or aren't social anymore. A bit of camp is part of the spice of life, a breath of fresh air. As far as comedy, John Inman was funny as hell, a true genious. I only knew him from Are You Being Served, but he was an exceptional comedian, gay or not.

well guys. i luv camp to be honest. probably cos i am a little camp myself. not so much on my own but it does come out more when i am with other camp fellas. Alan Carr, Julian Clary are great comedians. i have seen Larry Grayson on the general game on uk gold. a very funny guy. i think he camec into tv quite late in life which was a shame

I saw Larry Grayson at the Embassy Club in Manchester ( owner Bernard Manning and DEF. NOT a gay club) He was FANTASTIC as a live act and had Mr. Manning ( stood at the bar throughout the performance ) in stitches along with the whole of the very North Of England audience. He managed to bring " camp " to a totally acceptable level which I've never seen before or since.

I'm 50/50 on the subject. I love camp gay men in comedy, I love those who are camp in a working environment where their attitude makes them pop and stand out. But there are days where I go out, see a camp guy and just groan because, for some reason, I just can't stand it. I'm a pretty unassuming guy, people usually think I'm straight or think I might be gay until I do or say something that outs me; it's as natural for me as it is natural for them to be camp. I guess it's mostly due to bad experiences with them because most camp guys I personally met are utter bitches - it's not their camp that's bad, it's their attitude. Not to mention, when compared to my boyfriend, I'm much more camp than he is XD

Oh my word.. John Inman I remember him when he starred in "Are You Being Served?" (one of my all-time fave comedy programs!). He made me laugh so much. Sure, he had a unique campness but he managed to get away with it hahaha. I have a friend out there in America who is camp (natural) but I have no problem with it... but a majority of my gay friends are straight acting :)

I've known many gay guys that were very campy. And it wasn't an act. They were being their natural selves. I've also known a few gays that were very straight acting in public but campy in private. With those guys, the straight act was a contrived persona because they were in the closet. While in the company of other gays, they would drop the straight act and be campy as hell. And seeing them acting that way, I could see a look of joy and freedom on their faces like they were finally able to drop all the masks and be their true selves. So I personally am not bothered by camp if it means that a gay guy is embracing his true nature and being himself. If anything, there's nothing I enjoy more than seeing a couple of over the top campy gay guys going up to some Christian protesters at a Pride March and prancing, dancing and groping each other in the protesters' faces. In a way, camp is often how many gay guys publicly declare their homosexuality. They are telling the world "This is who I am, your opinion means nothing to me and if you don't like it, fuck you". And one more thing about campy gay guys. My experience with them is that they are enthusiastic bottoms and are really good at it. So when a campy gay guy cruises me and I like him, I know right off that I'm going to be in for a wild ride on a bucking bronco. So if any of you have an issue with campy gays, you should reserve your judgment of them until after you've had one in your bed. They really are great fucks and I think it's because they are freer of inhibition.

I love Gay Campness as used in Comedy especially a classic like La Cage aux Folles or The Birdcage.Guys like John Inman ,Charles Hawtrey and of course Kenneth Williams.I guess comedy is one thing and real life is another but i know that as Gay guys we are all different and if a friend is Camp then i support it.To me its not an Act but just how they are and we should support them .I personally prefer straight Acting but thats just my preference . Heres my Camp Heroe http://youtu.be/T7_IWWAlMJg
