WHO IS THE GAY PERSONALITY YOU MOST ADMIRE, AND WHY?

Blog Last Activity 9 years ago 594 views 17 comments
<p>The past and present are full of gay people, some more famous than others, some quite obscure, who have made incredible contributions to humanity, often at great personal cost and in the face of persecution.

...Madonna. Roman Farrow even though I don't agree on one thing with his politics.

Oh! The Red Hot Chilli Peppers...though I do not like their drug use and tattoos.

Tabatha Coffey because she is confident and fierce. Seriously, no one fucks with Tabatha. Tim Gunn is another person I admire because I just love his elegance.

Alan Turing (the code breaker in WW2 and one of the founders of computing) was recently and belatedly officially pardoned by the UK govt.. now we need a campaign to get him awarded a posthumous knighthood.

oscar wilde he was alover of art had a way with words imprisoned for gross indencey with other men - i never knew what that meant it was never explained to me - and i guess freddy mercury though i didnt get his music and growing up with homophobia i didnt see him as a role model but guess now he was but i reckon its todays openly gay sports men rather than artists that are the ones that make being gay more socially acceptable - giles

Thanks very much for all these posts, boys ... some great names here. I'm glad Alan Turing was mentioned, he's recently been given posthumous recognition and a pardon in the UK, so he's very much in the news. My personal choice would probably be Alexander the Great, who conquered the known world and was famous for his courage and wisdom (and for openly loving men) ... but gays have contributed so much to the world that it's actually hard to choose. And yes, Rob, Tchaikovsky was a wonderful artist.

I have heard of Alan Turing and they talked about his contributions in code breaking during the 2nd world war but I had never heard he was gay.

I really think Alan Turing is an obvious choice but I admire also Leonardo Da Vinci, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Rimbaud, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Jean Cocteau, Allen Ginsberg, Claude Jutra et Michel Tremblay...

A lot of good names mentioned so far. I saw the movie titled "Milk" and was impressed. Rachel Maddow is great, Alan Turing was a true hero. The movie that I saw about Liberace made me sad, I think Anderson Cooper is also a good role model. He's not "in your face" gay, which shows the world that we are just normal people.

Alan Turing. If you don't already know who he is and why he's my choice...shame on you. His contributions saved tens of thousands of lives and possibly Western Civilization as we know it.

I rather like Rachel Maddow She hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC and has a syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. She is the first openly gay anchor to host a major prime-time news program in the United States and holds a doctorate in politics from Oxford University. She is well spoken, intelligent and witty, I like her program.

The list would be very long for me. But probably at the top is Harvey Milk. This quote sums up his legacy...for it is still true today: "On this anniversary of Stonewall, I ask my gay sisters and brothers to make the commitment to fight. For themselves, for their freedom, for their country ... We will not win our rights by staying quietly in our closets ... We are coming out to fight the lies, the myths, the distortions. We are coming out to tell the truths about gays, for I am tired of the conspiracy of silence, so I'm going to talk about it. And I want you to talk about it. You must come out. Come out to your parents, your relatives."

Celebrities and well known personalitys are ambassadors of change and they have brought about a very optimistic revolutionary transformation in the attitude of the general public towards gays. Common folk usually look up to celebs and influential faces to bring about a change in the society and break its clichéd norms.Homosexuality was a taboo until well-known faces such as these came out of the closet and talked about gay rights and their own sexual orientation. They are not only adored for their talent and contribution to a change in attitudes worldwide, but are also respected for their individuality. These Personalitys have not only gained more respect but have opened up the doors for homosexuals to come out and be outright vocal about their sexuality.
