The list of books I could recommend is so long that it would stretch to several pages, so I won't attempt it here. My favourite mythical hero is Achilles, mainly because he had a weakness, but also because of his love for Patroclus. My greatest hero from Ancient Greece wasn't a myth at all, but a very real man, Alexander the Great. All gay men should of course read Plato's 'Symposium' and the 'Phaedrus', which explain very clearly why love between men is the highest and noblest on earth. But more than anything I prefer European literature, and read that to the exclusion of virtually everything else, and my favourite heroes there are Narcissus in Herman Hesse's 'Narcissus and Goldmund', and Joseph Knecht in Hesse's 'The Glass Bead Game'. Always read in the original language if you can; if not, choose your translation carefully.

Are you talking about literature on the subject of mythos or actual mythology? In terms of literature, The Odyssey is a good epic, but I never got into it that much. Personally, I like Oedipus Rex and Antigone because of their tragedies (I really like reading tragedies). I've also read Melusine, but that's a very difficult read and I had a hard time enjoying it because of that - however, it's a good story about hybrids trying to coexist as humans, but it doesn't work out in the end and there is revenge and curses lol
In terms of mythology, my favourite is King Midas for the valuable lesson it offers about greed.
