<p>Pedro Zamora died 20 years ago today. He was only 22 years old. But his participation in MTVs The Real World changed the conversation in America about HIV and AIDS. He commitment ceremony with his boyfriend was a first on American TV. The older I've gotten the more I've realised how much I owe to so many gay people, and particularly older gay men, who went before me and whose bravey and open-ness made possible the social freedoms I've sometimes taken for granted. I wish I'd been more aware of it when I was younger with the freedom to just waltz into gay pubs and other places, unaware of what such freedom had cost some people on my behalf.
