Earlier this year, fashion giant Zara pulled a childrenā€™s shirt from its stores after customers complained that the striped pajama top with a yellow star resembled Holocaust prison garb. I am all for free speech, but I am also for being sensitive to others, especially when the symbol or clothing design is so obviously offensive to so many. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/27/zara-anti-semitism_n_5722162.html

Im for free speech but i dont like any symbols used that were so prominant in the the war and cause alot of offence to those who suffered.

Some background: This logo was designed by Peter Christopherson aka "Sleazy" of the industrial band Coil in the 1980s. He also did several album covers for well known bands, including Peter Gabriel. I find it hard to believe that he did not know that this was the same eagle used by the Third Reich. However, later in life, he denounced anything to do with Nazi or Facist symbolism, and called out many designers and recording artists for using anything that resembled it in their work. Personally? I can understand why someone would be offended, but it's a free speech issue to me. Begin by banning symbols, and the next thing you know, people are in jail for ageplay, or liking very young looking 18 year olds. It's a slippery slope.

As time goes by, that era in history becomes a more distant memory and things associated with it become more and more forgotten to where whoever designed that logo simply never made the connection. I rather suspect some unimaginative and lazy designer saw it in a book and simply lifted it out and added BOY at the bottom and said "Aren't I clever? Here's my bill."

Symbolism does not and will not rule my life - I'm not a designer slave either.

swastika is another symbol used by the Nazis It is considered to be a very sacred and auspicious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. But certainly not used today to sell product.

It's a tricky issue because the double-headed eagle was already a national symbol of Weimar Germany before the Nazis came along. There's no doubt that this particular form of it was that of Nazi Germany, but even then it was just a newer design of what had been a 'national' symbol (like the Canadian maple leaf) for centuries. In other words, despite the swastika, this emblem was a symbol of Germany, not the Nazis per se. Saying all that, you'd think Boy London would err on the side of being a bit more sensitive. An older German form of the double headed eagle, or even the Roman form, might have been just as 'cool', without the unfortunate association.

I dunno. I mean I get the message of the meme, but do you really want to compare them using a symbol that was also stolen? In the end all I think when I see this is 'wow, it's really easy to change people's conscious definition of a symbol.'

I have a pair of jeans with a symbol similar to this too. Avirex clothing company.
