Remember when an earthquake levelled New Zealand's capital as punishment for legalising gay marriage?

Canterbury residents and supporters of marriage equality are among those who might be offended by the outlandish claim of a Right-wing fringe group that gay marriage was to blame for the "destruction" of a New Zealand city.

The London Swinton Circle's recent newsletter proclaimed the "recent destruction of Wellington by earthquake [was] a warning" after the New Zealand Government oversaw the introduction of gay marriage last year.

The group seemed ignorant of the fact New Zealand's destructive earthquake actually happened in Christchurch two years before gay marriage was legalised and more than a year before the Marriage Equality Bill was even pulled from the ballot for consideration.

... Continued - The comments were part of an editorial in the group's spring 2014 newsletter, which claimed New Zealand's proposed referendum to consider changing the country's flag was "unnecessary" and a "retrograde step" and described all of the country's leaders, including Prime Minister John Key, as being "socialist in origin".

Allan Robertson insisted New Zealand's current flag represented "important religious beliefs", including blue for the "Davidic Monarchy & Christ's eternal rule, White is purity, red represents sacrifice in battle and vitality".

"The black flag which they want to replace the Union flag with is the flag of militant Islam, piracy & anarchism," he declared.

The black flag Robertson refers to is probably the silver fern design once favoured by Key.

The London Swinton Circle's remarks were highlighted by European gay news service Pink News, which said the "Right-wing pressure group" was set up more than 50 years ago "claiming to uphold 'traditional conservative and Unionist principles' ".

One commenter said the group's "lack of compassion and basic human decency" left them speechless.

Another noted the group's "lack of compassion and human decency is second only to their lack of geography and geology".

GayNZ.com also criticised the London Swinton Circle, citing a clear "lack of facts" in its newsletter. - Story Stuff NZ News
