Our inability to be satisfied with what we have stems from living in marketing societies that insist we need to keep purchasing more in order to be fulfilled. Time-strapped and cash-poor, we continue to strive for what we believe the "Joneses" and the Hollywood stars have - more money, bigger houses, faster cars, and lovelier lovers. However, often all this wanting is leaving us unhappy and dissatisfied. Instead of wanting what we don't have, it can be a pure revelation to turn around and want what we already have - be it health, loved ones, a good career, interests, hobbies, a car, clothes, a home, great views, talents, etc., make the most of it and be grateful for it....and be happy. :) Peace

Like Thomas, I am one of the lucky ones that doesn't always crave that which others have. I don't need a fancy new car or a lavish big house. I would like to have a partner to share my life with, but I'm happy to take life as it comes to me. I think marketing has made many people miserable, but I also know that many of the "richest" people on earth have their own personal miseries to deal with.

Great post; it's so true. Unfortunately, sometimes when we come to terms with our happiness, there's not a whole lot of time left :(

The fact that the tenth (christian) commandment is: "thou shalt not covet (envy) ....! suggests that being dissatisfied with one's existing situation, wife etc, predates modern marketing by a couple of thousand years at least... it is perhaps a basic human incentive.

Have never lusted for what was on the other side of the fence. Have always enjoyed what I have. And guess my needs are few...a loyal and loving partner, food on the table, a roof over our heads and good friends to share life with. All the rest of the stuff is just that...stuff

It's the human condition to be partially dissatisfied. I reckon that if ur happy at least half of the time and nobody's oppressing you, it's all good :)
