Who has the greatest Rights: A gay couple have complained about a flatshare ad

A gay couple have complained about a flatshare ad
â?? that says a room is available for a straight couple only.

Ross Boulter and his partner Mikey say they were looking for a flat in Guilford on Spareroom.co.uk, when they saw a listing for a flatshare in the city centre.

However, after reaching out to seek more details, they claim the ad was altered to state the room is only available to a straight couple.

The listing now states: â??Room 3: Avail: VACANT AND AVAILABLE NOW: Ideal for a straight coupleâ??

Mr Boulter told PinkNews: â??At first the ad didnâ??t say it was for straight couples so I enquired. The ad then [changed to say it was] for straight couples.

â??To be honest we were both pretty shocked as it was an agencyâ?¦ we also couldnâ??t understand why.

â??What difference would a gay couple living there make? We both have good jobsâ?¦Â we both work full time and could easily afford the rent. We also have impeccable references.

â??It just seems wrong that we canâ??t move into a house, which clearly advertises for a couple, because we are not straight.

â??I find it hypocritical that we are preaching about gay rights to countries such as Russia, yet it is happening on our own doorstep. Maybe not as severe but itâ??s happening all the same.â??

He continued: â??Now I think about it, Iâ??d rather be homeless than give my hard earned money to an agency that discriminates someone because of the way they were born and who they fell in love withâ??.

A spokesperson for Spareroom.co.uk told PinkNews: â??Weâ??ll be contacting the agent.

â??There are some exemptions and grey areas when it comes to discrimination in shared properties, but the law is incredibly clear in this instance.

â??An agent (or landlord for that matter) canâ??t discriminate on the grounds of sexual orientation, itâ??s illegal.â??

Not really any different to putting "Not ideal for Children" in an advert for a place... Not discrimination...

Thats my point as i said, they should not discriminate in an ad.Even if he wants a white only midget couple ,he cant just say that.

Davey if the landlord is going to advertise for tenants then technically the ad must be open to EVERYBODY male and female BAD EXAMPLE: 1 sexy good looking young guy age ** to ** must be white caucasian non- smoker and no health problems. Unfortunately this is the situation some tenants are up against when looking for an apartment ( worldwide) It happens

I suppose landlords have there ideal Tennant in mind and can take who they like but they should not discriminate in an ad.

Well said "Marshmont" & "swiftjohn" ... The thing I find funny about a gay landlord I know who has several houses he rents... was saying, "I'd never rent to Indians because there Cooking stinks the houses out"... but isn't that also Discrimination?

I can tell you I have a family member who once TRIED to go down this path once before on circumstances VERY similar until they were made aware that when buying/renting a house, apartment it is in fact illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, disability, sexual orientation (and in some cases even whether or not if they are smokers or not). I am not trying to take sides in this debate but just sharing my personal knowledge

On the one hand, I don't like the idea of people being allowed to legally discriminate against me simply because I'm gay. On the other hand, I don't want to be around people who don't like or accept me. So if people don't like gays I would just as soon know that up front so I don't have to be around them. It's kind of like what is laughingly referred to as "Religious Freedom" laws passed in many Republican controlled States where a baker can refuse to make a wedding cake for a gay wedding because his god says we're an abomination. Do we really want to give people like that our money or eat what they're forced to make? I'd be afraid they'll piss or spit in the batter. I'd much rather give my gay money to a gay baker. And if he jacks off in the batter.....well....I'm cool with that. HMMMMM....sperm flavored icing for gay wedding cakes - that gives me an idea.

I have two thoughts. First, I do not believe anyone should be denied service due to gender, race, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation. And at the same time, not sure I would want to be sharing a place with a bigot.

This case has got me thinking, Who's rights are worth more... the couple or the personal belief of the landlord... Does someone who is Gay over ride the rights of a property own ...?
