When I first saw the film, I thought it was semi-creepy but then when I read the description (not the book, as of yet anyway), it made sense. Tadzio was his angel of death. He died as soon as he saw Tadzio's silhouette in the water if I recall... Bjorn Andresen (the boy who played the legendary Tadzio in this film) struggled for years with being identified with that film because of perverts (he was only 15 when they filmed it and 16 when it came out in theaters). He didn't have issues with the film itself but he struggled with that image. If you see him today (with very long white hair and a gray beard), you won't recognize him. He's 60 now.

Here you can watch "SEARCHING FOR TADZIO" ("Alla ricerca di Tadzio") the Italian TV documentary, broadcast in 1970. It offers a detailed look at the arduous process that Luchino Visconti and his crew had to go through to cast a pivotol role in the director's upcoming production, "Death in Venice". Visconti is the credited director of this featurette, and Oreste Del Buono wrote the spoken text. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eKEBLv8_Ys

That is so true Anjinsan, his beauty is definitely transcendent.

I agree wholeheartedly. And Björn Andresen (Tadzio) is sooo pretty.
