I have always understood onan withdrew from intercourse and spilled his seed on the ground as a means of preventing pregnancy. but there are different views on scripture. thanks for pointing that out. peace bro.

Sorry, didn't see your latest post before posting. Will, he is not my "god"; I have a very hard time believing in him. As I said earlier, I believe that IF a Supreme Being did create our world/universe, that in my estimation he is NOT "good/benevolent", but rather EVIL. This comes from my observations of many, many, "not good" things in our world/existence. I am on your page, friend Will. (And please let me know, privately, if I've disrupted your blog. I am afraid lately that I've become too loose-lipped on blogs, I hate myself for it but I need some feedback if it's the case.)

Sorry, I meant brother's wife not "(impregnate his) brother's sister". (And YHWH was one of the first representations of the Creator God's Name in Hebrew / Judaism.)

Valid point, David, thanks, but I wasn't arguing against that. This supports my assertion that the Bible is the biggest literary Rorschach test ever conceived. And it's no coincidence that your "god" hates the same people you hate, and loves the same things that you love. I'm fond of cherries, but not cherry-picking. Best wishes.

Yes, but friend Will, the "sin of Onan" is open to interpretation. (Which means, it's often used by fundamentalists for support in any of their interpretations....) Yes, "onanism" in one interpretation means masturbation. And in another means defying YHWH by refusing to follow His law and impregnate his brother's sister if the dead brother couldn't do it. And also has been equated with homosexuality itself, since homosexuality is sex without any chance of producing more of God's People via pregnancy. And, for that exact same reason (refusing to let sperm and egg meet), YHWH abhors coitus interruptus (pulling out of her before ejaculation, a form of birth control). But I have no problem with you Will, and I love your Marvel Comics analogy!

Actually, Jase, it IS mentioned in the Bible (Look up the Sin of Onan in Genesis, Chapter 38:9). Onan was killed by god for not being willing to father a child by his widowed sister-in-law as was required by Hebrew law, and instead "spilled his seed on the ground." This is the verse that is traditionally considered "anti-masturbation." But, if you ask me, the Bible being proof of god is much like Marvel comics being proof of the existence of Spiderman. Quote scripture at me, and I'll just ignore you.

God see a lot worse from me than masturbating. it is not mentioned in the bible, so how can it be a sin? God gave us this tremendous sex drive around the age of 12...what else is a guy to do? relief it!

Oh yes, growing up it scared me to death that God and Jesus and all my dead relatives could (and did) watch me masturbate, read my mind at all times, etc. I had a lot of "free-floating guilt" (don't know if that's the same as "free-floating anxiety"); which I still have. The guilt is engrained in me, even though 4 years of college (i.e. getting away from my family; and majoring in philosophy/religion helped too) transformed me from Lutheran into first agnostic-ish atheist, then born-again Christian (yes, I'm not making that up, I was filled with the Holy Spirit and everything — I then lapsed), then Jewish-ish (basically Christian, but I could no longer believe Jesus = God), then by maybe age 25 I solidified into what I still am, a moral spiritual / agnostic. (I hope I'm not hated on GBT for my lengthy and often off-the-wall posts.... Especially this one about religion.) Anywho, I'm only responding to the title here, not to the video which I'm about to see but haven't yet. OK, I'm getting around to it (responding finally): If a Creator God does exist, currently my thinking is that CG's EVIL not benevolent; therefore, I agree completely with Guynmuskogee / Jerrod's response below. (Sorry, I don't mean to step on anyone's toes about religion..., I may well regret posting this in an hour.)
