For me Auckland's North Shore is the place I love..Sure it's dear but the beaches are great..House prices have gone through the roof I know.. Christchurch is great to.
Agreed Anusinterruptus... Wellington is OK, Love Chch and hopefully it will be a cool city again soon... Places like Cronwell, Alexandra and the west coast of the south island and just stunning... NZ is changing quickly, and for the reasons other Countires are (Oversea's investors and mass immigration)
Davey1965; I'm not convinced Auckland should be in the top 3 best cities, or unless other big cities are awful, I'd pick Wellington and even chch over Auckland.
Down south of Auckland, we call Aucklanders "JAFA" (Just Another Fucking Aucklander). Anywhere south of a line from Taranaki to Bay of Plenty is ok. "Auck's" is ok if you like city living and cosmopolitan life style (and 1 Million dollar house prices for a "shitter"). Wellington is a sweet little city with great public transport. about 1 hour by road or rail, and you are in the Wairarapa valley (where I live) totally rural life style, take your watch off, you won't be needing that! Chill and enjoy.
NZ is a great country, but avoid Auckland, and spend as much time as you can in the South Island... Auckland is a shit hole now... third world infrasture and not real differernce to any other large cities around the world...
