well i finally did it. i came out to my family last night.. the funny thing about it was they were not shocked. my mom just laughed and told me she new for a long time. same with my sister and brother. it was hard but i had to get it off my shoulders. nobody really needs to know what my sexual orientation is. i just wanted to let them know just in case i ever meet someone. for some reason i am relieved but i do not feel any better.

Congratulations!  This can be so tough for so many, me included, and it sounds like this went very well for you.  Very happy for you!

Good for you. You are 45yrs. I did it at 40. My birthday party and there were way too many Gays and Asian men there. Both parents knew (apparently)? Shouldnt a parent say soemthing .. and 'help'?

Its all good ...enjoy it all..

Actually, I felt more guilt when I told Mum that I wasnt going to go with them to church at age 12!!

congratulations. Moms always know. dad's know too but deny it. it went really well for you. Some kids get kicked out by hyper religious parents. How "better" were you hoping to feel? The next big test is bringing a boy home and being a but affectionate with him in front of everyone. good luck.

I got so u0set trying to tell my Mom, I told her there was something about my self that she was going to hate, we were both on the edge of tears, I told her I was Gay...she seemed relieved "I thought you were going to say You Robbed a Bank or Torched a warehouse..." I wasn't sure how to feel, that being a felon was more upsetting than my choice on who I love...I told my good friends soon after. That was 30 years ago times were much different then, Mugging of Gay men was common, people being Fired for their preference of who they choose to love. Mom's acceptance of me, gave me the strength to face the homophobia of others.

You should be proud of yourself! Cheers to you 1 million times. You do deserve it. It still is a hard things to do, even if they did already know. Now it opens a lot of conversation with them and back from you. This is a way family can remain together and understanding. And you are an example to help others that may still be unknown to your family, even to you. This is wonderful!!! ????????????????????

(In my case, my family had no clue even AFTER I told them. It's 20 years later and they still are not asking questions to unload their ignorance. They wonder why my spouse and I live 2,000 km away from them for the past 14 years, but never bother to ask a question... ????)
