Donato Creti (1671 – 1749) was an Italian painter of the Rococo period, active mostly in Bologna. This work dates from 1745.

Jacques-Louis David (1748 – 1825) was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the pre-eminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime. This work dates from circa 1835.

Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Desmarais (1756–1813) was a French painter of the Neoclassical period, who after 1786 was active in Italy, rising to be a professor of the Academies of Fine Arts of Lucca and Massa Carrara. This work dates from 1787.

Giovanni di Niccolò de Luteri, better known as Dosso Dossi (c. 1489–1542),[1] was an Italian Renaissance painter who belonged to the School of Ferrara, painting in a style mainly influenced by Venetian painting, in particular Giorgione and early Titian. This work dates from circa 1524.

Nicolas-Guy Brenet (1728–1792) was a French history painter. Brenet was born and died in Paris. He studied in the atelier of François Boucher, but abandoned his master's rococo manner in the 1760s, to paint in a conscious revival of the academic classicism of Nicolas Poussin.
