Ideal time to come out? When did you come out

I have a friend who is still in high school and is just a freshman. Hes bi and he asked me when would be best to come out. He really doesnt care what people think but the worry is that hes asked a couple friends and they all the same thing about being bullied and teased, and that he should wait til after high school. Also he is FAR from ready to tell his family, but wants it to be out aside from his family. Obviously if he was out to everyone else it would be hard for his family to not find outeventually. I want to give him good advice and wanted some input, also when did you come out? and what reaction did you get from peers and friends?

not long ago and i fully credit toby19 for helping me (and will the rest of me life) now you can see me come out vid here but made with animation cos of me be cam shy (i have aspergers) http://www.youtube.com/billyboylston

Definitely wait till he is in college and around more liberal-open minded people. Of course that depends on what college he ends up going to. Some parents are so old fashioned/anti-gay that they will cut them off financially when it comes to going to school. If they are that type - wait to come out to them AFTER he graduates.

Alex, i waited til I was away at college to come out, it was much easier there. If he's worried about being bullied, see if he can wait a few yrs til he goes off to college.

When I first came out too my friends they were all really cool with. only one friend had trouble with me being gay, When it comes to talking with parents that can be a tough one, I had trouble bringing it up several times with my parents, until a few months back when I sat down and had the talk with my step dad. the best advise i would give to your friend is to come out when he is ready to come out.
