I dont think you have to size pic anymore. I am able to put up just about anything. Thats proven by my avatar change so often.

Most of the time it seems like folks who have issues with a profile pic its because the pic is the wrong size. Your profile pic can be no larger than 100 pixels wide by 120 pixels tall. If you need to re-size or crop your pic you can do that with many online photo editors, I like pixlr myself.
