LGBT in Russia

My home city has a twinning arrangement with St. Petersburg in Russia. A couple of days ago, I signed an online petition to try to encourage the city council to end that arrangement because of the anti-gay laws recently enacted in Russia. After reading this article on the Lesbian and Gay Foundation website, (http://www.lgf.org.uk/news-articles/solidarity-with-lgbt-russia/) I now wish I hadn't. Also, look at these videos: http://youtu.be/ztHZK2ZrlQM and http://youtu.be/Hmucr0l1wUA Please look at them and send your messages of support to Polina and all our brothers and sisters in Russia. Let them know that we all care and support them in their struggle.

I take your points Nick, but a lot of LGBT people are likely to suffer physical violence and even lose there live's in that period of time. They, and we, can't afford to wait that long before taking action. As to the point about the Winter Olympics, it's very easy to understand how they got the games. It was in just the same way that Qatar were awarded the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Money. Unfortunately, in todays world, you can do anything and get away with anything if you can grease the right palms with sufficient cash. The old saying 'The love of money is the root of all evil' is very true.

Glad you feel that way Kev. The main one to avoid is Russian Standard, that's government owned and it's actually made in Russia. Stolichnaya is ok to drink, that's made in Latvia and the company that owns the brand is gay friendly. Just check the label and if it says 'Made in Russia', put it back on the shelf. I doubt that our government will do much. As we get a huge proportion of our gas supplies from Russia, they won't want to antagonise Putin too much in case they cut off supplies.

They certainly do. But I think it may take a while. Unfortunately, they and other countries, are heading backwards into the middle ages. In the meantime, gay people get beaten up in the street and nobody lifts a finger to help. Even the police ignore it. Teens are being lured to meets by people posing as other gays on social networking sites. They are then beaten up and humiliated. This torture is filmed and then posted on the internet and sent to their parents and their schools. There have been suicides because of this. Yet the police do nothing.

Russia needs to wake up and realise we are in the 21st century now.
