Our beloved and praised Big Neighbor, China has decided to write some history again.
Now there’s a plan to officially merge several megacities around Beijing into one super-megacity, Jing-Jin-Ji that will house the equivalent of a third of the US population in an area that’s the geographical size of Kansas. It would be spread over 82,000 square miles and unlike metro areas that have grown up organically, Jing-Jin-Ji would be a very deliberate creation. Its centerpiece: a huge expansion of high-speed rail to bring the major cities within an hour’s commute of each other. Jing-Jin-Ji has both political momentum and financial backing to make it happen. The plan has the support of President Xi Jinping and would get a huge boost if Beijing (more specifically, the nearby mountain city of Zhangjiakou) is awarded the 2022 Winter Olympics. Or perhaps they’ll be named the Jing-Jin-Ji Olympics. I think that they should first focus on air quality, such as the picture you will notice that visibility is sometimes a bit poor ... without mentioning the effort to breathe.
