Horny : you probably have quite a few duplicates a separate hard drive is very good idea.

Just a suggestion: buy a external hard drive with Usb 2 ore 3 connection but if you can afford it look for a SSD drive.
No moving parts , very fast, no fragmentation, so no defrag , almost not heat.
Drawback : at this moment they cost more than a normal hard drive and are smaller
