I asked a former member whose background deals with this sort of thing. he replied, "Don't need Trump. Nothing to fight. This guy's rhetoric is NOT designed to scare the west. It's designed to keep his own people in line. He's following the line of the old Soviet Union that did the same thing. By making an imaginary enemy he (and his family before him) projects an image to his people that only he can save them from the enemy. This is strengthened through personality cults that demand loyalty to the leader as opposed to the state, although the intensity has diminished since the DPRK was formed.  That way he can be 1) oppressive to keep an eye on enemy spies (when he's really watching his own people) 2) keep his borders closed to foreigners because they come only to perform some covert action against the state ( when he really wants to keep his own people from leaving). The Berlin Wall was much the same. Everyone thought it was built to keep the west out, when it was really built to keep East Berliners IN. So by projecting an image to his people that his regime is the only one that can deal with the "evil" west, it keeps him in power as it has kept his family since the end of World War II. It's worked for them thus far. Why has DPRK turned up the volume on their "war of words" with west the past few years? 1) Kim Il-Sung died in 2011, and seen as as a much stronger leader than his son, of whom is seen by many as "brain dead". It was important to show their people they were still strong, if not stronger. 2) It has been known that when faced with a political crisis such as the changing of despotic leaders or even  severe economic problems like the DPRK has, it is common to deflect the attention elsewhere, such as rhetoric against an enemy, real or imagined.Unlike other situations where war has broken out, it is not likely to happen in this case. The DPRK has no allies with the exception of an exasperated China, and they are not interested in seeing that happen.Using the political ploys like these were used in the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and other countries that keep their illegitimate governments in power. Neither the Soviets,Nazis or the DPRK's govt were/are legitimate. They were not elected; the Soviets took power by force and then they themselves installed an illegitimate govt in the DPRK. That makes a government very insecure, so they are more afraid of their own people than the outside. So how do they deal with it? Crack down on everyone, keep them behind a wall, all under the guise of "protection against the outside". No, it's protecting themselves against their own people." Thanks, Bri.
