Big Bend National Park

If you ever get out to West Texas you have to visit Big Bend National Park! And be sure to spend the night.

From  Wikipedia - In 2012, the park was named as an international dark-sky park by the International Dark-Sky Association, which recognized the park as one of only 10 places in the world certified for dark-sky stargazing. In addition, the association recognized the park as having the darkest measured skies in the lower 48 United States. On many nights, park visitors can look up to the night's sky to see thousands of stars, bright planets, and the clear outline of the Milky Way band. Astronomers, both professional and amateur, are seen on many moonless nights gazing up at the stars through portable telescopes.

Big Bend National Park is one of the least visited national parks in the country and it's huge. 1250 Square miles and only 4 paved roads. That's 2 1/2 times the size of Los Angeles. I've been there dozens of times and never get tired of it. If you don't go on a holiday or spring break it seems like you have the park to yourself. Tons of hiking and camping opportunities. Mountain, canyon and desert trails and some of the brightest night skies anywhere. The only downside is that it takes a long time to get there from anywhere!
