Has anyone here ever taken some sort of official Gay Studies in school?  Such as classes OR done historical research yourself throughout the history of time and humanity?      How about knowing and understanding what clicks (and turns them on) with people from throughout time as well?      I guess I am also curious about what documentations there are about people's thoughts and beliefs throughout all of time.   (Be it the written word, art, even photos and film.    Obviously this website and the internet provide a nice degree of photos and film but I am just curious about any other rare or unknown views I guess.)     Sure I know a bunch of stuff myself and have books on these things but I was curious what you all knew if anything out of the ordinary that most people would not perhaps, eh.

I like reading stuff from antiquity..........especially about Sparta and the very early Greeks, city states like Athens, Carthage, Thebes and Corinth. Homosexuality was the norm where boys and men where expected to have "boyfriends" before and even after they got married.

Hi MSGBoy,

Are they histories or fiction? I would like some to be based on facts.

I know from personal previous experiences that then lesbians in the community didn't think of gay/bi, or men in general, as allowed in their social circles. They were sometimes labeled as "men-haters." A lot them did have mistreatment in their lives and thus didn't trust men. Some ignorant people on both teams, used to think this caused them to be lesbians. But NO, that is not the non-debatable source for men to be gay or women to be lesbians.

Trust me, I know it's not why I'm gay/bi. I have memories from my early days before my abused times that confirm to me that I was destined to be involved with other males. But abuses will cause groups to splinter apart. I did what I could to help them have women only dances and meetings as part of the pride organization.

Feminism histories would also be interesting to me.

"Queer London", by Matt Houlbrook would be a good place to start; covers a lot of ground about the gay underworld in London from WW1 onwards.

"Gay New York", by George Chauncey gives an excellent history in this country, as does  "Memoirs" by the famous playwright Tennessee Williams.

Also read "The City and the Pillar" by Gore Vidal; although a work of 'fiction' it is basically autobiographical about Vidal's relationship with a boyhood friend who was killed in WW2 (and Vidal never quite got over his death). It gives an idea of what gay life was like back in the 1940s.

Thanks Nick18. But, get some more sleep!! Your health is important too. Maybe get another moderator to help you out while you get the rest? Or, put in certain hours where it's down for "repairs" each night?

Especially here, you're allowed to make your position known. Free speech everyone diserves. Some will not agree with whatever gets writing by you or others (like me).

From my experience as a young boy from within the '70s (dating myself here), I do see the difference with bisexuals and the way things have been differently happening with those that grew up 'purely gay.'

I've never taken a course or class on sexuality in the states. The ones here at universities aren't much different, I'm guessing... I believe a lot of these courses are politically slanted or they are based on psychological terminology. Most of this hasn't kept up to date or has been evolving. The media has been using these terms to manipulate and to make the public to be paranoid against all of us. So, who and why are they needing to do this for a minority? This has been happening since the broad cast of radio and TV. So, not much has evolved over the past few centuries. Why are they afraid of us?

The why I was in the "shadows" so long, was due to information and difficulty understanding growing up with very few examples of gay people. Bisexuals were barely talked about. And once I was looking into coming out in '90. I was being betrayed by military life and society here in Canada. We were still being called "pedophiles" and pervs without real proof of numbers. Once I did come out and publicly explained my bisexuality, even gay people back then didn't believe we were permanently bisexual. They said this was a confused and questioning "phase."

So, yes this is still going on.. and is returning to used because we are being freed more on the internet itself. Religion is becoming in more danger of disappearing. Maybe they think we are the blame? They never learned that their bigotry will never continue to win in a FREE Country.

Blargh!!! Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting... I have to do it with my family soon...

Yes, and there are some great books on this topic if you are interested. One of the better ones, that's very highly rated, and really thick, with tons of pages, covering almost all of gay history in one large volume, is called "Homosexuality and Civilization," first published in 2003. I've actually got bookshelves filled with such books if you'd like additional recommendations, but I'd start with that one.

...and I'm not talking about rape, abuse, torture, or s&m stuff...
