Soooo what is the thought process and or rules for whether something (a video, eh) is "amateur" or "professional"?

In gay porn when they refer to "amateur" they often mean sites like Amateur Straight Guys, Broke Straight Boys, College Boy Physicals, etc. On these sites the models are paid, but the scenario is usually set to look like they are just regular guys coming in to make some extra money and not professional porn models. It's a nuanced difference though because they often usually appear in several videos and sometimes regularly over two or more years and work on several different porn sites. These videos have more of a reality-tv feel and aren't staged, so they don't appear to be acting, even if they are to a certain degree. There is usually a dialog between the director and the models who often starts with a short interview and may give directions or make comments during the scene or even get involved. These scenes are often pretty standard such as: solo jerk off, duo jerk-off with reach around, duo with oral and anal, threeway, orgy, bukkake, gangbang, handjob, etc.

When they refer to professional they usually mean bigger studios with better production qualities, set design, storylines, location shoots, etc. Traditionally under the old studio system, the best models would be turned into "porn stars", often having an exclusive contract with one studio which would manage them, handle their marketing, advertising and basically would be seen as more of a job/career with regular paychecks and traveling to promotional events, signings, etc. The amateur porn models usually work more on a freelance basis.

The terms can be confusing because some people call homemade/self-produced porn "amateur". With the advent of site like x-tube and cam sites a lot of non-professionals began making their own porn. Sometimes just for fun or exhibitionism and sometimes for money. A lot of porn models might begin this way and work up to an amateur site or a professional porn studio. Many do all three. Hope that helps answer your question.

On occasion an "Amature" model may well be being paid  ( and I suspect more often than not , is ) . Beyond that it devolves to hierarchies of opinion . Digustibus non  disputandum  est .

Well, it is really nice to see someone can spell "amateur" properly. Pretty simple, it seems to me... Professional models get paid, amateur models do not. Paysites pay models for making photosets and videos; so they are, by definition, professional. Also, amateur images and videos are characterized by poor or non-existent photographic and cinematic standards, e.g. out-of-focus, jumpy, failure to show interesting bits, etc. Alas, too many things we find nowadays fit into this amateur, poor-quality, genre; way too many bad photographers out there. Even so, some amateur models can achieve greatness, but rarely.

'Professional' means he's paid, 'Amateur' is free
