I made a batch of these yesterday as a trial run for tomorrow, and they're great. Topped 'em with an egg wash and poppy seeds. Yum.

I can't cook for shit. No matter what I do, no matter what ingredients I use or how precisely I follow the recipe, it all tastes so bland you might as well be eating ramen without seasoning.

They are good, and pretty easy to make, just takes a little time. I hope you have the chance to make them soon. The first batch I made was a little sweet, and so I've backed off the sugar bit for the rest.
BTW - I see that you live in SLO. I lived on Almond Drive (off S. El Pomar/Templeton) for 15 years or so. I really miss it; it's cold as hell here.
