75 Years ago, operation market garden failed and the British and Americans failed to capture the City of Antwerp (Belgium) and Arnhem. The Canadian First army and 2nd Canadian Corps together with 1st British Corps, and the 1st Polish Armoured Division managed to do what earlier had been a failure, to liberate the Netherlands and Belgium, open the port of Antwerp and insure that the rest of the allied army's had enough supplies to win the war and open the road into germany.

Yesterday we honored the 12,873 casualties, and today we celebrate the success of the Canadians under Field-Marshal Bernard Montgomery who won the The Battle of the Scheldt.

Yes it where the Canadians and the Brits who the Dutch owe their freedom to.

Today we honor the bravery and the success of the Canadians who paid a high price for our freedom.

To all the Dutch: Happy liberation day!!.

From Wikipedia.

The nation was liberated by Canadian forces, British infantry divisions, the British I Corps, the 1st Polish Armoured Division, American, Belgian, Dutch and Czechoslovak troops. Parts of the country, in particular the south-east, were liberated by the British Second Army which included American and Polish airborne forces (see Operation Market Garden) and French airbornes (see Operation Amherst). On 5 May 1945 the Canadian General Charles Foulkes and the German Commander-in-Chief Johannes Blaskowitz reached an agreement on the capitulation of German forces in the Netherlands in Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen. One day later the capitulation document was signed in the auditorium of Wageningen University located next door.

The Netherlands and Belgium were liberated thanks to the brave soldiers of the entire Allied Forces starting on the day they arrived on the beaches of Normandy on D Day.
