It's based on a mistake in biblical interpretation by the early Greek / pagan fathers of Christianity, who didn't really understand the Jewish scriptures. Specifically, the story of Onan in the bible. In that story, Onan has sex with his deceased brother's wife, but at the last minute, he pulls out and spills his seed on the ground, and is punished by God because of it. The early pagan Christians thought that story meant that it was a sin to "waste seed," and that semen therefore could only be used for procreation. But that was wrong. The Old Testament included a law on "Levirate marriage," which said, that if someone's brother dies and leaves his wife without a child, the surviving brother must impregnate his dead brother's wife, causing her to have a child, to keep the family line of his brother going. Thus, Onan's sin wasn't the fact that he spilled his seed outside of the womb, and the story doesn't actually mean that spilling your seed outside of a woman is wrong -- instead, Onan's sin was breaking the Levirate law and failing to make his brother's wife pregnant, thus leaving his brother without a continuing family line. The early Christians, who had never been Jews, and did not read Hebrew, did not understand this and misinterpreted the story. That's also the reason that the Catholic Church prohibits birth control -- it's all based on a misinterpretation of the story of Onan, that's really ignorant, and kind of hilarious, but the early Greek-speaking Christians didn't know any better. Masturbation, birth control, etc., have never been prohibited in Judaism, or any other religion besides Christianity, and it's all based on a dumb mistake.

When will people realise that 'sin' is a religious construct?

Because it is considered cheating by people and the forces and powers that be throughout all of time up to even now.    Everyone else have to expose themselves to disease and pregnancy through way of sex so other people should not be allowed to get their satisfaction (endorphins) in some back door roundabout way or manner.    It's about power...and abuse.    It's bullshit but that doesn't stop religions deeming it as evil and wrong.    That and people try to have others thinking and doing something other than sex too often.    Whatever that means.    That in itself has some level of credibility but going as far as calling it a sin is unfortunate and frankly rather abusive.    At best it originally was probably a break down in communication but embraced as a tool of control over the long run.    Do you use your left hand, right, or both?    :)      Both for me but genuinely right since I am right handed, eh.
