BEIJING (AP) — A gay man in central China has successfully sued a mental hospital over forced conversion therapy, in what activists are hailing as the first such victory in a country where the LGBT rights movement is gradually emerging from the fringes.

A court in Zhumadian in Henan province ordered a city mental hospital to publish a public apology in local newspapers and pay the 38-year-old man 5,000 yuan ($735) in compensation, according to a copy of the June 26 judgment seen by The Associated Press.

The man, surnamed Yu, had been forcibly admitted to the institution in 2015 by his wife and relatives and diagnosed with “sexual preference disorder,” court documents show. He was forced to take medicine and receive injections before finally walking free after 19 days.

In its relatively narrow ruling, the court did not weigh in on the practice of gay conversion therapy or account for Yu’s sexual orientation. The court said forcing Yu into a mental institution if he did not pose a danger to himself or others amounted to “infringing on the plaintiff’s right to individual freedom.”

When reached by phone on Tuesday, Yu’s lawyer expressed satisfaction with the outcome but declined to discuss the case, saying his firm asked him not to speak to media. Yu declined to comment.

China removed homosexuality from its list of recognized mental illnesses more than 15 years ago, but stories are rife of families admitting their relatives for conversion therapy.

Gay rights activists say the case marks the first victory against a public mental institution for compulsory therapy against a patient’s will. In 2014, a Beijing man named Peng Yanhui checked himself into a private conversion clinic to investigate its advertised electroshock treatments. Peng, a gay rights activist who goes by Yanzi, then sued the clinic and won a $500 decision from a Beijing court for the suffering he endured in treatment.

The recent ruling in Zhumadian “confirmed the illegality of forced treatments,” Peng told the AP. “It’s time for China to enact laws to prohibit forced gay conversion therapy.”

The Zhumadian mental hospital did not immediately provide comment when reached by phone.

While few Chinese have religious objections to homosexuality and homophobic violence is rare, the country’s authoritarian politics and conservative society’s preference for marriage and childbearing create subtle barriers that keep most gays in the closet.

Vibrant gay scenes do exist in a few large cities including Shanghai, which has an annual gay pride parade, and depictions of same-sex relationships are increasingly seen in Chinese films and television. China’s internet censors have also tolerated increasingly open debate about LGBT issues.

Last week, Chinese netizens expressed outrage on social media after a government-affiliated internet TV industry association warned streaming content providers against depicting “abnormal” sexual behavior including incest and homosexuality.

Hours later, a provincial branch of the Communist Youth League, an influential organization of the ruling political party, appeared to join the debate, declaring on China’s Twitter-like Weibo microblog that “homosexuality is not a mental disorder,” and urging its followers to “put down your prejudice and hostility, you can do it!”

The unexpected post from a party organization was soon reposted tens of thousands of times and attracted an outpouring of support as well as criticism.

I love this guy's one-man-band video.  Usually I re-post it on my Facebook page every year, around the afternoon of Thanksgiving or the next day.  (This year, forgot about my "tradition" until just now.)

When I visited a friend's house (I was 14), he left me alone in his room for a moment. His white briefs were on the floor.  I picked them up, rubbed them, sniffed them....all the while excited, but looking over my shoulder afraid I would be seen. So I've been seeing a commercial on TV for a show on CNN that is airing tonight about porn addiction.  Since we are all on this internet porn site, I wanted to see how others actually feel about their own views on porn.  

I started watching porn when I was about 10 years old.  My parents had just given me my first computer that I could use on my own in the privacy of my own bedroom.  It wasn't like "oh good, now I can watch porn", I started off watching a lot of YouTube, playing online games, and finding some chat rooms.  Eventually my 10 year old hormones started kicking in and one day when my parents weren't home, I typed "porn" into Google and boy did my eyes nearly pop out of my skull.  

The first thing that porn did for me is to help me come to realize that I was gay.  I was so intent on watching the guy sex, the girl sex just didn't do it for me.  I wanted to see other guy's dicks.  It made me comfortable with my own sexuality.  I was never scared, or "questioning", about my being gay.  I figured if this many people out there liked other boys as well, then it must be OK.  I've never flaunted my sexuality.  I guess you could call me one of the "straight acting" gay guys.  But I've never said that I wasn't gay when asked.  

Porn led to some fun times as a teen with other teen boys from my school and neighborhood.  There was more than one occasion where a buddy of mine and I would watch a porn and then try to copy what the porn actors were doing.  Whether that be making out, giving blow jobs, or rimming and fucking.  So yes, you could say that porn was our sex education teacher.  

And that is where the show on CNN I think is going to try to emphasize.  Porn has become the leader in sex education.  I'll be the first to admit, even from my experience, that porn is not the best way to get your sex education.  But sex is the one thing that parents don't want to talk about, that parent's don't want the schools teaching, and parent's don't want you hooking up with older people to learn either. 

I believe at 10 years old that is when you want to start teaching boys and girls about sex.  That is when their bodies are starting to turn on the sexuality switch.  By 13 the hormones are in full gear, and most boys don't know what to do with it.  By 15 a good majority of boys, at least out of my own little surveys over the years, have experimented with sex with mutual masturbation or blow jobs before their parents have given them "the talk".  I did a small survey for a paper I wrote and most parents I talked to said they gave "the talk" only after they had found out, or believed, that their kids were sexually active.  That is like teaching a kid a stove burner is hot after they put their hand on one that's on high.  

Everything in life, besides sex, seems to be taught long before you need it.  Why is that?  Why is society so scared about sex?  Do you want to know the group of people that I've found that teach their kids about sex, how the body is not something to be ashamed of?  Nudists!!  This group of people seem to be so much more open minded that sexuality is just basic human nature and not something to be afraid of.  There is no body shaming.  If you are young or old, fat or skinny, it's just you being you naturally.  

I think one of the biggest failures of porn, it that it doesn't teach the "love" aspect of sex.  Porn teaches that sex is just sex, that sex is fun to do, and that it's no big deal to do it.  It doesn't teach that when you find a boyfriend or girlfriend that sex is used to show your love and affection to that person.  I've gotten better at it over the last few years, but I remember a boyfriend I had when I was 19 where though I really did have an affection for him, I had a hard time with sex to show love.  We ended up doing sex only when we were both horny until we broke up cause we both went to different schools.  

I think it is going to be a hard thing to change.  The government in the school system isn't going to be able to help much beyond what it does now.  It has to be up to the parents to really make the change.  The longer parents wait to start talking about sex, the earlier that kids reach out to the internet for porn, the more dysfunctional in sex a lot of kids are going to be as they grow up.  

That's my take on things.
